Cross-border cooperation in flood protection
In flood protection and the implementation of the Flood Risk Management Directive (FRMD), the state of Brandenburg works closely with neighbouring federal states and neighbouring countries within the river basins. The state of Brandenburg has shares in the Elbe and Oder river basins.
At the international level, voting takes place in particular in the
- International Commission for the Protection of the Elbe (ICPE) for the Elbe River Basin between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Czech Republic (Contracting Parties) and the Republic of Austria and the Republic of Poland
- International Commission for the Protection of the Oder against Pollution (ICPO) for the Oder Basin between the Federal Republic of Germany, the Czech Republic and the Republic of Poland
- German-Polish Border Water Commission.
At the national level, voting takes place in particular in the
- Elbe River Basin Community (FGG Elbe) for the river basin of the Elbe between the ten federal states situated in the river basin
- Coordinated Odra river basin district (KFGE Oder) for the Odra river basin between the federal states of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Free State of Saxony.
In addition, coordination across river basins takes place between the 16 federal states and the federal government within the framework of the Standing Committee on Flood Protection and Hydrology within the Federal/Länder Working Group on Water (LAWA).
