Protection, conservation, and utilisation of fish stocks

With its numerous bodies of water, the state of Brandenburg offers optimal conditions for different types of fishing. The quality and diversity of the waters are indispensable prerequisites for the development, conservation, and utilisation of fish stocks, which must be protected in their biodiversity and natural species composition.

The legal mandate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Climate Protection (MLUK) is to create and organise the framework conditions for:

  • the protection, conservation, development and utilisation of aquatic flora and fauna,
  • the development of competitive fisheries and
  • the promotion of angling.

Administrative, supervisory, and specialised authority

The focus is on the implementation of EU regulations and the requirements of the State Fisheries Act. As the supreme fisheries authority, the MLUK is represented on the State Fisheries Advisory Council, performs extensive tasks as an administrative, supervisory and specialised authority vis-à-vis the lower fisheries authorities and for the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and thus also has a structural impact. In addition, the State Office for Rural Development, Agriculture and Land Reorganisation (LELF) provides technical support for the funding provided by the fisheries levy.

In addition to the above-mentioned areas, a wide range of consultations on nature conservation and environmental designation and planning procedures are required.

In connection with the tasks described here, the supreme fisheries authority of the state of Brandenburg also provides further information to support the practice of fishing and personal training for interested parties.
