With about 34,600 kilometres of running water and around 3,000 lakes, the state of Brandenburg is one of the most water-rich states in the Federal Republic of Germany. The water balance reacts very sensitively to climatic influences. The comparatively low average precipitation in Germany, the high evaporation of the lakes and the low storage capacity of the soils mean that in many regions of Brandenburg, persistent drought can quickly lead to yield losses in agriculture and cause lasting damage to water bodies. In the case of floods and heavy precipitation, on the other hand, the water can often only flow away slowly due to the lack of structural diversity and retention areas in and along the water bodies, the low storage capacity of the landscape and the low gradient relief.
